Religious Studies

Pupils are provided with the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of religion by exploring the significance and impact of beliefs, teachings, sources, practices, ways of life and forms of expressing meaning. They are encouraged to express their personal responses and insight on fundamental questions about identity, belonging, meaning, purpose, truth, values and commitments.

A multi-faith approach is taken from Year 1 to Year 9. 

The two-year AQA GCSE Religious Studies (A) course, commences in Year 10.

At Key Stage 1 pupils study the following areas:

Celebrations of Different Faiths; the Stories of Jesus; Islam; Belonging; Churches and Judaism.

At Key Stage 2 pupils study the following areas:

Celebrating Diwali; the Meaning of Faith; Hinduism; Christmas; Easter; Journeys; Christian Beliefs and Actions; Faith and the Arts; Worship and Community; Muslim Beliefs and Practices; Sacred Texts and Religious Buildings.

At Key Stage 3 (in Years 7 and 8) pupils study the following areas:

Daily Life in the Different Religions; Holy Books and the Meaning of Prayer.

Visits to Buildings of the Different Faiths are arranged across the age range.

OFSTED gave ‘Outstanding’ for the School’s ‘Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development’, for which we are extremely proud.

 Religious Studies includes:

Christianity and Buddhism which are studied in depth and the aim of the course is to develop pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding of different religions by exploring the significance and impact of beliefs, teachings, sources, practices, ways of life and expressing meaning.

The opportunity is provided for pupils to express their personal responses and informed thoughts on fundamental questions and issues about identity, belonging, meaning, purpose, truth, values and commitments.

Two units are studied:

Unit One:

The study of Religions: beliefs, teachings and practices (beliefs, teaching and practices of two religions)

Unit Two:

Thematic Studies (Four religious, philisophical and ethical studies themes)

Pupils will be expected to describe, explain and analyse, using knowledge and understanding. They will also be asked to use evidence and reasoned argument to express and evaluate personal responses, informed insights and differing viewpoints.
