Geography Department

The aim in the Geography Department is to make pupils more aware of the world around them and encourage them to be responsible, global citizens.  We aim to achieve this by teaching pupils not only about their local area but also providing an insight into the lives of others around the world.  We study both Physical and Human aspects of the subjects at all Key Stages.

In Key Stage 3 we look at topics such as What is Geography, Weather and Climate, Flooding, Urbanisation, Africa, Map Skills, Environmental Regions, Plate Tectonics, Resources and the Environment, China and International Development.  This provides a broad base to build on at GCSE level.

At GCSE level we study the AQA (9-1) Course, which is a varied course allowing many different topis to be covered over the three year course. There is an opportunity to develop understanding of both Human ans Physical Geography as well as a range of skills, which pupls will be able to use in many other GCSEs and in their future lives.  If pupils enjoy learning outside the classroom and completing projects then this course should be appealing to them. They will be looking at Geography in the real world both on a local and global scale. There will be no coursework just three examinations at the end of the course.

Topics we will cover include:

Living with the Physical Environment

The challenge of natural hazards. This will include topics such as Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Hurricanes and Storms.

The living world. This will focus on ecosystems such as Tropical Rainforests and Deserts.

Physical landscapes in the UK. This will focus on topics such as Rivers, Coasts and Glaciation.

Challenges in the Human Environment

Urban issues and challenges. This will look at differences between countries around the world and will focus on developments of towns and cities including the need to build sustainable cities considering the needs for renewable energy and recycling.
